Webinar Series: The World Has Changed
Webinar Topic: How to engage with democracy – beyond voting
Webinar Date: February 20, 2021
Indian Parliament is at the core of its representative democracy. It makes legislation, oversees government policy and functioning, and sanctions taxation and public expenditure. However, the functioning of Parliament has declined over the decades. The session will discuss some critical reforms needed to revitalise Parliament as a body that works to protect the liberty and improve the well-being of Indians.
The largest democracy in the world is also a beacon of hope to the developing world. A poor country and perhaps, the most diverse one on many axes — religion, language, ethnicity — India has been a success story for democratic governance over the last 70 years. India’s Parliament remains central to this story. Join me as we discuss some of the structural issues that need to be addressed for the democratic saga to continue through the next few decades.
