Product Manager at Google and cofounder of NanoPrecision Medical.
Lily Peng, MD, PHD, is a non-practicing physician and product manager for a team that works on applying deep learning and other Google technologies and expertise to medical imaging.
Most of her research projects are centered around the confluence of engineering, medicine, and business. She was the lead researcher on a recent study that shows that deep learning applied to a retinal fundus image, a photograph that includes the blood vessels of the eye, can predict risk factors for heart diseases — from blood pressure to smoking status. Something as simple as an eye test could help in predicting the occurrence of a future major cardiovascular event on par with current measures. This study was conducted at Verily (googles health-tech arm) along with the Google AI team. She was also part of the research team that trained the same AI disease detecting software to diabetic retinopathy (condition in which damage occurs to the retina due to diabetes mellitus and is a leading cause of blindness).
