Joe Madiath

Social Entrepreneur, Founder & Executive Director -Gram Vikas

http://gramvikas.org/

At the tender age of 12, Joe Madiath helped farm workers in his father’s field organize a protest to fight for better working conditions. Since then, he has never looked back.

Witnessing the devastation of the 1971 Orissa cyclone, and realizing the comparatively little attention received by the disaster victims, Madiath and a small group of volunteers decided to provide help in the area. Once their relief efforts were complete they decided to stay back and work there as development activists. Thus, Madiath founded Gram Vikas in 1979.

Today, Gram Vikas has reached out to over 40, 000 households in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, with projects like biogas promotion, community forestry, rural habitat development, education, water and sanitation.

Madiath’s efforts have been globally recognized in recent times. Armed with a humble smile and a lot of hard work, he continues in his relentless effort to make the underprivileged self-dependent and give them a more livable life.
